SMUK. Fashion Decoration: a Show-Off
Putting historical and contemporary decorative techniques of luxury fashion in the spotlight through clothing, accessories, and couture.
The Fashion Museum Hasselt presents 'SMUK. Fashion Decoration: a Show-Off', which offers an interactive experience for its visitors. Aiming to present the way fashion was decorated throughout the centuries, the exhibition highlights the important milestones in the craft. Starting in the rococo period when the art of decoration for fashion was a high handcraft, all the way to the industrial revolution and the sudden mechanisation of decoration, and ending today, at a time of unprecedented advancements in technology, SMUK is a visual feast for the eyes taking us for a trip down the craftsmanship lane. Introducing visitors to all the various techniques as well as their evolution, the exhibition also offers the possibility for people to make their own decorative pin or cuff using modern technologies.
A publication of the same name will be published with the exhibition. For the first time, this book brings together the scientific insights of the decorative embellishment techniques used in the luxury fashion industry. International curators and researchers provide a clear view of the various techniques, the socio-economic background, and the visual and aesthetic value of these decorative creations. They offer innovative views on luxury, the atelier studios, the role of decoration in fashion, and embellishment in the man's wardrobe. Authors: Karolien De Clippel, Corinne Thépaut, Florence Müller, Peter McNeil, Romy Cockx, Rebecca Devaney, Anaïs Huyghe, Eve Demoen and Nadia Albertini.
